Frequently Asked Questions

Classes & Event Info

Are private lessons available for my child or myself?

We believe that students thrive in the social setting that Group Piano offers. Keynotes provides group and individual challenges in each class, as well as opportunities to improvise, listen and compose. The Studio encourages all students to begin in Group Classes. Every class, we will evaluate student progress and determine if they are in the right environment for their style of learning. If they are not progressing or need a different approach, then private lessons will be considered.

Private Lessons are 45 minutes for $140

What are Group Classes?

Piano tends to be a lonely instrument, but it doesn’t have to be! In our group classes, students play for one another, participate in music games and activities, and often explore new concepts together. Every group session is a chance to grow in confidence, make friends, and enjoy music as a team.

Do you offer online classes?

Yes, some of our classes are available online. Check the class descriptions above to see if your class offers an online option.

How can I support my child in lessons?

One of the best things you can do is talk about class on the ride home — it helps reinforce what your child just learned. You can also keep up with “practice tips” they bring home, encouraging your child to use them throughout the week. Practicing doesn’t mean playing a song straight through — great practice is focused, goal-based, and sometimes messy!

Additionally, parents who are able to are welcome to join classes! It’s a fun way to bond and model great learning habits. We also host a monthly video call for parents and guardians to ask questions and get the rundown on what’s happening at the studio!

How much practice time is needed?

We recommend students practice at least 5 days a week, but not necessarily for long stretches. For beginners, 10 minutes a day is a great start! The key is consistency, not perfection. Practice should be goal-based, like playing a tricky section three times in a row with no mistakes. Setting timers can make practice feel like a chore, but small goals build progress and confidence.

If your child seems discouraged or bored, let’s talk. Often, a change in material or class structure can reignite their interest. Open communication between parent, teacher, and student makes all the difference.

What if we need to miss a class?

Makeup classes are not guaranteed, but there are flexible options available. If your child can’t attend at their usual time, you may request a video session during their regular class time, or receive a personalized video lesson to watch at home.

What do I need to start classes?

To begin, you’ll need a piano or keyboard at home. An acoustic piano is ideal (tuned once per year), but a digital piano or full-sized keyboard (88 weighted or touch-sensitive keys) works great too. A damper pedal is required, so be sure your instrument includes one or can be fitted with it.

You’ll also need an iPad, which is used regularly for at-home practice assignments and in-class learning through interactive music apps.

If you’re unsure what type of piano or iPad setup to choose, I’m happy to offer suggestions!

Will I need to pick up any music?

Nope! I’ll take care of ordering the materials your child needs at the right time. You’ll simply reimburse me for the cost.
